Your lawn needs fertilising at least three times each year. As a general rule this should be in spring, mid-summer and autumn.
If you live in a tropical climate avoid fertilising before and during the wet season. If, however, you live in a sandy area or on the Eastern Seaboard more frequent light applications are needed.
